Step by step

How Vigil works

The receipt beside each step is an illustrative example of what a reviewer sees, not data from a real case.

  1. 01

    Define the review protocol

Write criteria for responsive material and specialized review. Saving a change creates a separate protocol version rather than rewriting the instructions for an existing run.

criteria · protocol version · saved run
  2. 02

    Track source coverage

Tessera processes eligible source units and records analyzed, failed and withheld material. Missing units or failed sections keep the run incomplete.

    analyzed · failed · withheld
  3. 03

    Inspect quoted suggestions

Retained AI claims carry quotes validated against the cited lines. A separate verification call checks the anchored passage; same-model checks are labeled as such.

verbatim quote · cited lines · check type
  4. 04

    Record human decisions

Reviewers record responsiveness, privilege and redaction-review labels, tags and notes. Decisions keep their revision and actor. Prioritization reorders remaining work; it does not replace human review.

    decision · reviewer · revision
  5. 05

    Examine held-out samples

Inspect validation and elusion samples with their denominators, unknown labels and uncertainty. Sample metrics are not a certification of corpus-wide recall.

    sample · denominator · uncertainty
  6. 06

    Export the internal review register

Download the review register in Word, PDF, Excel or CSV after recent authentication. Exports are audited and retain source references alongside human decisions.

source reference · human decision · audit
Limits we state plainly
  • AI suggestions and review labels are not legal conclusions about responsiveness, privilege or disclosure obligations.
  • Sample metrics describe the reviewed sample and its stated denominator. They do not establish that every responsive item in the case was found.
  • The review register is not a Bates-stamped production or an applied redaction. Review labels do not remove content from source files.
  • Source eligibility, incomplete coverage and same-model checks remain visible for reviewer judgment.
